RAI Area Review Team: Frequently Asked Questions

Created: Wednesday,  20 June  2007

Q: What is the RAI Area Review Team?

A:  They provide detailed reviews of RAI area related documents (usually WG documents) to ensure that they're well scoped and applicable to the working group in which they're proposed to be progressed.   The reviewers may also identify the need for earlier cross-area review for RAI documents and occasionally review documents from other areas applicable to RAI area protocols.  The reviews are instigated by either a RAI AD or a RAI WG chair.

Q: Who is on the RAI Area Review Team?

A: The current membership list is maintained at  RAI Area Review Team.  The team is made up primarily of RAI Area WG chairs and current WG document editors and contributors.  Each RAI Area WG must have at least one of the WG chairs serve on the review team.  RAI WG chairs may also appoint someone to serve in their place on the review team.

Q: How can I join the RAI Area review team?

A: Interested volunteers should contact the RAI Area directors or a RAI WG chair, with the understanding that a significant amount of experience in the RAI area working groups is necessary to serve on this review team.  Folks with less experience within the RAI area WGs might want to first consider serving as a SIPPING (or other RAI WG) reviewer to gain some more experience prior to joining RAI-Art.

Q: How was my document reviewer(s) selected?

A: There is a mechanism that involves both selecting a reviewer based on technical expertise in a certain area and leveling the review workload.  The same reviewer will be assigned for all subsequent reviews of a single specification.

Q: Are the reviews public or private?

A: The reviews are sent to the RAI Area mailing list.  Reviews are also sent to working group chairs, authors/editors, and the WG mailing list.  The archives are publicly viewable at: Reviews .   A link to the reviews is also maintained in spreadsheets, which contain  information as to the document status, timelines, reviewer and links to reviews:

Q: Are the RAI Art Review comments binding ?

A:  In the case of documents being reviewed during or before WGLC, the document editor needs to consider these comments as general WG feedback and provide conscientious responses to each issue raised.  Any changes to WG documents, as usual, must be based on WG consensus.   Thus, these comments are treated like any other WG mailing list feedback on a document.  In the case of document feedback after WGLC, but before a document has been forwarded to the AD, the document editor should check with the document shepherd (usually a WG chair) for guidance.  For documents being reviewed at the request of an Area Director (and post-WGLC), the document shepherd should check with the AD and WG chair for guidance in handling the review comments.

Q: Is there any written RAI Art procedure?

A: At this point, the only official procedure is documented in this FAQ and the Guidelines.
