The following steps specify how documents in the SIP WG will go to, through, and past last call. (You can see the timeline view here.)
Proposal
Author(s) or chairs propose that a draft go to working group last call (WGLC).
LCC checks with author(s) that the draft is ready for last call and has no dependencies outstanding.
LCC identifies the Draft Last Call Coordinator (DLCC) to run the last call for this draft.
Chairs or designated party ensure latest version of draft is posted on Supplemental Web Site.
Chairs or designated party create a tracking page for this draft.
Chairs note proposal on the draft's tracking page and on the WG status page.
Initial Consensus
Chairs review draft and decide whether to accept the proposal.
Chairs may propose last call to SIP List to evaluate and determine consensus.
Chairs refer the draft and its priority to the Last Call Coordinator (LCC) for Pre-Screen.
Chairs note the referral on the draft's tracking page and on the WG status page.
Pre-Screen
LCC and DLCC identify and assign an available nits reviewer from the pool of volunteers.
Nits reviewer checks the draft against nits list (IANA, security, 2026, etc.) and reports results to Author(s) and DLCC for delousing and further scheduling..
LCC or chairs note the conclusion on the draft's tracking page and on the WG status page.
Prioritization & Scheduling
LCC and DLCC identify and assign three available reviewers from the pool of volunteers. They may do so by polling the SIP List or by nominating reviewers.
LCC and DLCC schedule WGLC, taking into account the priority guidance from the chairs, availability of the reviewers and the number of drafts in review concurrently.
LCC posts schedule of last call on the WG calendar.
DLCC announces last call to the SIP List and begins chairing the discussion by the date scheduled earlier. WGLC will last at least two weeks.
LCC or chairs note the last call on the draft's tracking page and on the WG status page.
Working Group Discussion
Discussion and review of the draft opened to everyone.
DLCC will act to keep the discussion on-track.
LCC notes the start of the discussion period on the draft's tracking page and on the WG status page.
Assigned reviewers will post their reviews within one week to the SIP List as part of discussion.
Author(s) track issues, suggestions and conclusions from the SIP List.
After the close of the discussion period, the author should report a summary of the issues, suggestions and apparent conclusions to the SIP List.
Persons raising issues or making suggestions and conclusions should check to verify that their points are addressed in the summary and response.
During the discussion, the chairs or LCC may add discussion points to the draft's tracking page.
During the discussion, the author MAY submit a revised draft that addresses issues raised in the discussion. WGLC may continue with the revised draft or be rescheduled appropriately at the discretion of the chairs.
Consensus Determination
At the scheduled close of the last call, the DLCC will record issues, suggestions, and conclusions and poll the chairs for an evaluation of consensus.
The chairs may choose to poll the SIP List or use other mechanisms to evaluate rough consensus on the draft.
The chairs report the consensus to the SIP List. This consensus will indicate a need for rejection, additional review, further work, further work and additional review, or transmission to IESG.
Chairs or designated party record consensus to the draft's tracking page and status to the WG status page.
Transmission to IESG
If the conclusion is to proceed to IESG, the chairs email the Area Directors and IESG (iesg-secretary@ietf.org) of the recommendation and request IESG review.
The chairs note the referral to IESG on the draft's tracking page and on the WG status page and notify the SIP List.
If the conclusion is to return the draft to the author(s), the chairs notify the author(s) and SIP List.
